Monks to Millbrook

This tour not only takes participants on a journey through a wonderful part of Western Australia but also on a journey through life experiences and choices. From the drive past Karnet Prison Farm, to the austere dignity of a Theravadin Buddhist monastery, built beneath the trees, and in perfect harmony with its natural surroundings, to the hard life of a historical, colonial township, to over-the-top indulgence at one of WA’s most highly regarded wineries.

Participants will gain an insight into all areas visited with expert commentary from our knowledgeable guides.

Our tour begins with a drive through the amazing Darling Scarp taking us past the Karnet Prison Farm and on to the tranquil Bodhinyana Monastery, home to Theravadin monks who practice the world’s oldest existing form of Buddhism.

Highlights of our monastery visit include giving of alms, by way of offering rice to the monks, and an audience with the charismatic Ajahn Brahn, founder of Bodhinyana Monastery if he is not teaching elsewhere. AJahn Brahn is a former Cambridge University theoretical physics scholar, he studied alongside Stephen Hawking. He is the author of numerous inspirational books and has lectured all over the world. He is now an Abbot and spiritual director of the Buddhist Society of Western Australia. There is also the opportunity to join in meditational prayers and chanting, engage in quiet meditation, or a take a serene walk through the Monastery gardens. Our guide will be with you all the way.

Next, we see how life was in the early settler days in Jarrahdale, one of Western Australia’s oldest settlements and one of the few towns that have maintained historic identity.

Set in the Darling Range and surrounded by Jarrah forest, Jarrahdale displays nature at its best. Take a bushwalk, step back in time at the old Post Office Museum, wander through the pioneer cemetery or just relax at the local pub or coffee shop.

If you would like to know what your future has in store, let us know beforehand and we will organize a tea leaf or tarot reading in the township. (separate cost and subject to availability)

A short drive from Jarrahdale is the amazing Millbrook Winery, one of Perth's most acclaimed restaurants in one of Perth's most stunning wineries. Here you'll be escorted past the lake and the helipad, where the well-heeled fly in for lunch, to the elegant wine tasting area where your indulgence begins. Following a very informative talk and numerous wine tastings, enjoy a 2-course luncheon with included wine, beer or soft drink, and savour the flavours produced by award-winning chef, Guy Jefferies. You will soon discover why Millbrook was voted Winery of the year – It is truly superb! This tour can only be booked subject to availability of Millbrook winery.
